The Design Centre at HAL Nasik division established in 1964 to provide design support to the manufacturing programme of MiG-21 FL aircraft has grown over the years in strength, capability, infrastructure and facilities into a full-fledged Aircraft Upgrade Research, and Design Centre (AURDC).

Presently it has over 179 qualified designers with vast experience In all activities connected with design viz. design improvements on MiG series aircraft to suit customer's needs, support to indigenization, technology upgradation and structural integrity studies for life extension, flight test analysis and mid-life upgrade. The Centre is recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

The Centre is supported by three laboratories viz. Static Test Lab, Resource Test Lab and Material Test Lab.

421 modifications on MiG-21 variants, 88 modifications on MiG-27 and 26 modifications on SU-30MKI aircraft have been carried out to improve flight safety, reliability, performance, maintainability, integration of new equipment and armament carrying capability.

Aircraft Update

  • MiG-21 BIS improvement Phase I was successfully designed, the aircraft was modified and tested to improve range and manoeuverability
  • MiG-21 BIS upgrade with new Radar, Nav-attack system, HUD, MFD and avionics with the necessary structural, electrical and mechanical modifications has been completed
  • MiG-27M upgrade project has been completed
  • Su-30 MKI upgrade is on hand
