TARDC at Kanpur


The Transport Aircraft Research and Design Centre (TARDC) at Kanpur was established in 1967. TARDC has developed core competence in role modifications for transport, maritime and intelligence warfare aircraft, integration of mission system and avionics, aircraft upgrades, indigenisation, damage survey and assessment, development of repair and preventive maintenance technology, cabin furnishing and layout.

Approvals
TARDC operates under:
  • Design Firm approval from CEMILAC for carrying out Design & Development activities on military transport aircraft.
  • CAR 21-JA approval from DGCA for Upgrade / modify / repair HAL manufactured Civil Do-228 aircraft and for carrying out activities related to its continued airworthiness.
  • Recognition as an In-House R&D Unit by Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).
Quality
TARDC looks after Quality Assurance in the R&D activities which involve:

HAL Do-228
TARDC has successfully integrated state of art Digital Autopilot, Speech Secrecy System, Maritime Patrolling Radar (MPR), Pollution Surveillance System (PSS), Electronic Support Measures (ESM), Forward Looking Infrared Camera (FLIR) etc. on HAL Do-228 aircraft of Indian and foreign customers. Additionally, various avionics integrations have been undertaken on HS-748, AN-32, Boeing-737 transport aircraft and MI-17 and MI-8 Helicopters.

In civil transport aircraft domain, centre has experience of integrating Automatic Flight Inspection System (AFIS) on Do-228 aircraft and Mid-life Avionics Upgrade on HS-748 (AVRO) aircraft.

In addition, as a Design Organization, TARDC co-ordinates activities related to the manufacturing of civil role Do-228 aircraft, developing and integrating modifications to meet Regulatory requirements as well as Customer and Obsolescence management requirements which may be utilized by prospective customers under UDAN like initiatives started by Govt. of India. This civil role Do-228 aircraft has already been integrated with latest Engines and 5-blade Composite Propellers along with state of the art avionics.

Digital Autopilot is a three axis Flight Director and Autopilot which operates with Flight Command and HSI instruments.
Integration of Maritime Patrol Radar (MPR)
Integration of Maritime Patrol Radar (MPR)
MPR is a multi-mode X-Band Radar which supports Air-to-Sea (A/S), Air-to-Air (A/A) and Air- to-Ground (A/G) missions
Integration of Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR)

FLIR is a Compact Multi-Purpose Advanced Stabilized System which is used for day and night observation, aiming, and range measurements 
Integration of Electronic Support Measures (ESM)
Integration of Electronic Support Measures (ESM)
ESM provides Automatic Detection, Sorting, Identification, Geo-location and parameter extraction of Pulse and CW radar emissions
Integration of Pollution Surveillance System (PSS)

PSS is intended to increase surveillance capabilities like oil slick, marine pollution, search & rescue operation, sea ice mapping and foe ship identification

TARDC has excellent capabilities to recover bird-hit aircraft. The subject aircraft is surveyed, schemes developed to repair the aircraft on-site wherever possible or the aircraft is brought to Kanpur after carrying out initial repair on-site to make it fly-worthy for taking up final repair.

TARDC has excellent capabilities to recover severely damaged accidental aircraft (e.g. Aircraft landed on belly). The subject aircraft is surveyed, schemes developed to repair the aircraft on-site wherever possible or the aircraft is brought to a suitable base station after carrying out initial repair on-site to make it fly-worthy for taking up final repair.

Indigenization

The Centre is also engaged in indigenization to mitigate the dependence on foreign suppliers. These indigenized products have resulted into the substantial amount of FE savings over the years.
